May you be strengthened with all power,

Totally Random!

Good morning Everyone!!  It is May first and our family is on the road.  We are on the 2nd day of a two week trip that will take us from Florida, up through Tennessee, on to Ohio, across to Missouri, Kansas and back down to Florida!  Are you tired already?!?  I am! :D  Not really, I'm very excited about this trip, because we are going to get to spend a few days, with two of our grown daughters and their families.  Nana, ALWAYS loves time with those grand babies, (and grand kids, as a few of them are getting past the age where, they are happy when I refer to them as "babies"!)

Appreciate your prayers for us as we travel!  We are taking our grandson, Crosby along on this trip, so that is an added "bonus!".  

Ok, on to my "random thought" this morning.  As you may or may not know, I design, Digital Scrapbooking kits, and sale them on MyMemories, at Memory Mosaic .  The profits are used in various "Love In Action" ministries at our church in Manta, Ecuador.  Mainly, in the Food Pantry.

My Inheritance & Identity in Christ, Day 9

For as by the one man's disobedience the many 

were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience 

the many will be made righteous.

Romans 5:19

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, 

so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

Because Christ became our substitute and bore the wrath

of God in our place, he has provided the atoning 

sacrifice for our sins, and the sins of all who believe.

Just as God imputed our sins on Christ, "he made him to be sin",

so God imputes the righteousness of Christ - a righteousness

that is not our own - to all who believe in Christ.

Because Christ bore the sins of those who believe, 

God regards and treats believers as having the legal status of 

"righteousness".  It belongs to us because we are 

"in him", that is, "in Christ".

The righteous one, my servant, [shall] make 

many to be accounted righteous.

Isaiah 53:11

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, 

we have peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1

Justified - declared not guilty, but righteous 

by the divine judge.  

This is so much more than saying one is found not

guilty, or that they are forgiven...this is saying

that we have been made righteous.

Declared righteous by God!

We are justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

Romans 3:28

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

and are justified by his grace as a gift,

through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Romans 3:23 & 24

Justification is the result of saving faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Nothing can be added or taken away.

It is trusting Christ as my Savior, believing he did it all.

Once for all.

His was was enough.

JESUS IS ENOUGH.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those 

who are in Christ Jesus. -Romans 8:1

Why? Because God has condemned sin in the flesh

by sending his own Son to pay the penalty 

for sin through his death on the cross.

Romans 8:3, For God has done what the law, 

weakened by the flesh, could not do.  

By sending his own Son in the likeness of

sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.

My debt has been paid.

More than that, we also rejoice in God through our 

Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have 

now received reconciliation.

Romans 5:11

Not only have I been justified, legally declared 

righteous before God,  through the death of Jesus Christ,

I have been reconciled to God through the 

resurrected life of Jesus Christ!

Because of Christ I have a personal/intimate 

relationship with God.  No longer fearing the wrath of God, 

but rejoicing in my God and my daily walk 

through life with him.

Memories & Musings...

Today I opened up my Facebook feed and there in the "On This Day", were these two photos.  That brought back so many memories!!  They were taken the evening we flew into the Flint, MI airport on our return to the US for our first furlough.  We had been in Ecuador for about 2 1/2 years, and there was a large group from our Home Church, waiting to greet us.  They had a big banner and balloons for the girls.   

In this photo, you see my Mom holding my youngest (at the time), my Dad in the background holding onto the balloons, maybe talking to my oldest, (not sure) and I'm there with my middle daughter, who seems pretty excited/overwhelmed by it all.  In the background there are a couple girls from the church, taking down the banner.

I love these photos because there is so much love and joy in them!  They also tell a bit of a story! Leaving home/country/culture is a sacrifice for a missionary.  We do it because we sense God's leading and calling and don't get me wrong, we don't do it, "screaming and kicking".  No, we feel blessed and there is a lot of joy in serving the Lord where he leads you.  Our family has been overwhelmingly blessed to be able to live and work in Ecuador.

But what these photos tell is not so much the sacrifice the missionaries make, but that there are others that are sacrificing, too.  Many of you know that I am an only child.  So when Tony and I went to Ecuador, not only did my parents lose the opportunity to have daily contact, and dare I say to experience even the "mundane" events of daily family life with their only daughter, they also gave up that relationship with their only grandchildren.  I knew in my head that it was a sacrifice for them, (and the rest of our extended family that lives here in the US) but I never really understood it in my heart, until our 3 daughters grew up, and moved back to the States...then our own grandchildren started arriving.  

Now my parents did an AMAZING job of staying connected with my children.  In the early years,(remember this was all before internet, email, Skype, etc.) They would write and send cards regularly. We would take turns calling each other.  They would call us once a month, and we would call them once a month...so we got to talk on the phone twice a month.  That was back when it cost A LOT to call internationally, and for us, it could sometimes take a couple days to get the call to go through.  We would have to call an operator... give them the number we wanted to call...hang up... when they got the call through, the phone would ring again.  Once the call was finished the operator would call back and tell us how long we talked and what the cost of that call was.  Most of the time the call back with the connection was just a few minutes, BUT, I do remember it sometimes taking a day or so.  They also made trips down to see us, twice our first term there, and a few more times before the girls graduated from high school.   Also once we got email, we would write each other everyday(seemed like an amazing thing at the time)... and as internet capabilities improved, communication became even more frequent.  

Still being a framed photograph on the wall and a voice on the phone, or even a person on the other side of the computer screen, in the case of Skype or Face Time, is a far cry from being present in the every day.  Experiencing even as I mentioned before, just the mundane activities of life...being able to eat supper together, or Sunday dinner.  Having the opportunity to have the grandkids over for a sleepover... or be there to watch them after school for an hour or two.  It is through those things that you build a relationship...you get to really know them and they get to know you.  When you don't have those opportunities, the relationships just aren't the same.  I'm not saying that you don't or can't have a relationship, I'm just saying it's different...and it's something you sacrifice.  

I'm so thankful that my parents love God and love me so much that they were willing to make that sacrifice.  NEVER. ONE. TIME. have they complained to us, or asked us to do something different. I know that God has blessed them and has blessed us in so many other ways, and I am thankful for that, but today's post is just about recognizing that it IS a sacrifice, and it's not always easy. 

My Inheritance and Identity in Christ, Day 5

Let us then with confidence draw near 

to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy 

and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16

Because of Christ's sacrifice, securing my salvation, 

the forgiveness of my sins and my adoption into God's family, 

I have the privilege of a personal relationship with God. 

I can come near to him, confidently, even though he is the

Almighty, All Powerful, Great God!

Why?  Because he is my Father, my Daddy!  

I can speak to him without any fear of

being shamed or punished. 

God the Father with Jesus Christ at his right hand,

graciously dispenses help from heaven to those

who need it, who draw near, and ask.

It is given with mercy and grace.

Praise God!!

My Inheritance & Identity in Christ, Day 4

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, 

who gives generously to all without reproach,

and it will be given him.

James 1:5

Wisdom is God-given & God-centered discernment for the

practical issues in my life.

God gives this wisdom, generously to me, when I'm asking

seeking his will in a situation, without reproach.

Two thoughts, on this... 1) His wisdom will ALWAYS, be centered 

around his plan and will for me in any given situation.  

He isn't just putting his stamp of approval on "my plan". 

2) It is ALWAYS without reproach.

He doesn't say, "you again?! What to you want now?"

He wants me to come to him everyday, in every 

situation, and ask for his discernment. He doesn't want me

to hesitate to go and ask.  There is no reproach for being

"dumb or stupid" and not already knowing the answer!

I remember years ago, playing "Trivial Pursuit", with some

good friends.  I can't tell you how many times, while 

playing the game, and reading the question to 

someone else, my friend, would say,

"Oh that's so easy!  Anyone would know the answer to that!"

In my mind, I'm thinking, I'm so glad, this isn't my turn, because

I don't have a clue what the answer to that is, 

and they would just think, I'm totally stupid!

I think sometimes, I tend to have that reaction to God.  

I think, Oh no, I've got myself into another mess, 

and I have no idea which way to turn.  I need to figure this out 

on my own,  because I just went to God about that 

other problem, and I don't want to "use up" his good favor... 

BUT, the truth is, we never, ever use it up!  God wants us to come

to him about EVERYTHING, and he says, he will

give his wisdom to us, without reproach!

Do you not know that you are God's temple 

& that God's Spirit dwells in you?

1 Corinthians 3:16

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, 

he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead 

will also give life to your mortal bodies through 

his Spirit who dwells in you. 

Romans 8:11

When I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior, God adopted me into his family.

On that day, my adoption day, he sealed the legal act of my

justification by giving me a gift to mark the day...

That gift was his very own Spirit in me!!

The Holy Spirit of God dwells in me.

If you have accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord and Savior,

he also lives in you!

Just let that sink in for a bit.

My Inheritance and Identity in Christ, Day 2

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, 

we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1

I have been justified.  It is my objective legal standing as a Christian.

I have been redeemed, and declared righteous by God,

once and for all! Peace has been made between me and my God.

The result of this, is that I no longer live under the fear of judgment and the

wrath of God.  Rather, I have God's peace, which is not just

a feeling, but an objective reality.  This is a gift to me 

from my Daddy!!

God's Peace (shalom) does not just mean the absence of chaos and turmoil,

but also carries the idea of positive blessing.

Because I have inherited God's Peace, I can truly say, no matter 

what the circumstances are, "All is well!" I know to the very depths of my

soul that God is in control.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, 

he gave the right to become children of God. 

John 1:12

When we put our trust in Christ, believing he is who he said he was, and we accept a personal relationship with him, and submit to him, as God's Son, 

we become a child of God, with all the rights and responsibilities that entails.   

That is our Adoption Day into God's family, 

and we are legally bound, (justified) to him for all eternity.  

It is legal and binding and can not be undone.

The family of God becomes our Forever Family!! 

That my friend is a pretty amazing thing!  

Easter...

I hope you had a Happy Easter!!  Our family enjoyed being in the US for this special holiday.   I will be honest that I was pretty much in love with all the cute decorations available and all the aisles at the stores, filled with Easter "treats" for the kid's baskets.  It was a bit overwhelming, but at the same time it was so much fun. :)  I didn't let myself purchase very many decorations, just a few for the 2 tables we have here.  Haven't decided if I will be taking them with me back to Ecuador, giving them to my daughter here, or packing them away, to be available the next time we are in the States for Easter. :D  Oh the decisions to be made. 

 Sunday afternoon, 4/16/2017

My married daughter here in Florida, had to work Sunday night, (she's a CNA at a local hospital). So we decided to have our big dinner, on Saturday, and give the kids their baskets afterwards, and even have our family egg hunt. Sunday was focused on church. Tony and I along with Teddy and Carla, helped out in the children's groups here, as they have a huge influx of people in on Easter. Carla, Teddy and I were assigned to pre-school, while Tony worked down with the 5th grade boys.


I will admit that I was NOT looking forward to working with the preschool kids. There were 2 things going on with this. First, we as a family aren't in the States very often at Easter time. When I thought about Easter and getting to be in the States, I was looking forward to being in the Worship Service as a family. Then there's the fact that it's just not an age I really enjoy working with... yes, if you know me, I did teach in Early Childhood for years... yes, children's ministry was my primary focus of ministry for the first 13 years of our missionary service. But, I have spent more than a decade working in Women's ministry, and my involvement in Children's ministry has been as a "resource" and a teacher, training teachers. I am much more comfortable speaking to a room full of ladies than dealing with preschool kids and all that entails. (and yes, I very much enjoy having my grandkids around and the majority of them are "preschool" age! :) Anyway, that being said, I had been praying that the Lord would help me to have the right attitude, and use me to encourage and bless someone on Sunday.


Just about the time we were ready to actually start class, the door opened and 2 little kids walked in. Their parents were speaking English to us, but Spanish to the kids. They came in, and watching the other kids started trying to participate. I went over to the little girl, and asked her if she spoke English? She looked and me and then said, no. So, I explained to the two of them what we were going to do next. They joined the rest of the kids on the rug, and then I watched as the teacher, started the opening, using some eggs to explain the Easter lesson, (a shortened version of the popular Resurrection Eggs). I asked her if I could have the eggs for a minute before she moved on, and I sat down on the floor next to these 2 children, and showed them the eggs and explained the whole story. As I spoke to them in Spanish, they lit up and became engaged. We continued with the video lesson, which involved some interaction with the kids. They tried to follow along and do the hand motions with the rest of the kids for the songs, etc. Then we broke up for "small groups" where we were going to review the lesson. I took them over to a table, and using the visuals we had, told them the story in Spanish. As I was speaking to these 2 and they were asking and answering questions, the Holy Spirit spoke to me in the still small voice... "See, I didn't make a mistake! You are EXACTLY where I needed you to be today!"


I don't know about you, but I still need these reminders from time to time. You know, when we think things should be going a different way, or we wish they were different. When we are following God, and seeking his will and walking in the way He leads, it's important to remember that he NEVER, EVER makes a mistake. He has a plan and a reason for everything he allows. Sometimes we will know right away, like I did yesterday, sometimes we may not know until we get to heaven, BUT, that doesn't mean we can't trust Him, and remember that he does ALL things well. His plans are not my plans and his ways are not my ways. He has plans so much bigger, and better than I could ever imagine.


Keeping my eyes on Jesus today. Hope you are too!

The Armor of God

Sometimes, God's working in our life is slow and gentle, and sometimes it comes as at a time when we weren't expecting and catches us totally by surprise.  Have you ever been in a place in your life, when you felt a bit unsettled, uneasy, or even just a bit fearful of what the future was going to be, or how all the pieces were going to fit together, BUT at the same time, felt that you were in a pretty good place in your spiritual life?  I mean you were consistently having your devotions and you were "doing" all the "right things".   Right in the middle of this, season, when even though you were struggling at bit with contentment and joy, you were sure everything was "fine"... God drops something in your lap, that totally lifts the "scales" that had been over your eyes, and clouding your spiritual eyes from what was really happening in your life?

Well, that is where I found myself just 4 short weeks ago.  We stopped at our friends house, for one night on our family trip along the east coast.  That evening my friend shared with me that they had started a new Bible Study with the Ladies of their church.  I shared the Bible Study I was doing, (which was/is an excellent study).  Then she mentioned that a few of the ladies that hadn't been able to attend Sunday evenings study was going to get together that night to watch the video from Session 1.  So I went up to watch.

I will admit that I almost didn't go up... I thought, I don't want to intrude.  I won't be able to do the whole study, why go watch the first session, I don't even have the book.  I'm in the middle of doing a great Bible Study, myself.  But, the Spirit of God prompted my heart to go.  Thankfully, this is one of the times, I didn't try to rationalize myself out of obeying, but just went up.  That first session,  I took several notes on my phone.  I was captivated by how many of the truths she was speaking about, lined up with what I had been studying...you know,  you really need to sit up and pay attention when God uses multiple people and sources to speak the same truth to your heart!!

A week later our trip brought us back to these same friends, where we were planning to spend a week.  In that week, I had the opportunity to watch Sessions 2 and 3, and my friend, gifted me with the Study book.  In one week, I completed the "homework" for weeks 1 and 2.  I couldn't seem to get enough.  I also kept wanting to share every new thought with someone.  I would think, WOW, I never saw it like that before!  Or WHOA, what a difference that would make if people actually applied it to their lives!!  What a difference it would make if I would just apply it!

Now,  I accepted Christ as my Savior when I was 5 years old.  That means that I have been walking this Christian life for 50 years.  Just like everyone else, some seasons better than others.  I have been taught and have taught about the Armor of God, we find described in Ephesians 6, countless times. As a child I did "sword drills" in Sunday School and Children's Church...(if you don't know what this is, it basically is a game you play with children, to see who can look up Bible verses the fastest).  I even became aware of the need to "put it on", daily, asking God to use each piece to guard the different areas of my, my mind, my heart, my walk, etc.  BUT, I can honestly say that until I did this study, I never really looked at each piece in detail or thought about how each one specifically was designed to protect me from the attacks of Satan.  I also NEVER connected the Armor of God in Ephesians 6 to the Armor of the Divine Warrior in Isaiah 59, BUT many of the people who were reading Paul's letter in that day, totally got the connection, both the examples to the armor of the Roman soldiers that they saw on a daily basis, and also to the Divine Warrior described in Isaiah as they were students of the Old Testament.  This armor God has given to me, is not just any armor that was lying around... It is his very own armor!!  He took it off and GAVE it to me!   I have God's own armor to put on and defend myself in this daily battle.  There is NOTHING more powerful that I could have than that!!

If you are feeling unsure of your value or who you are in Christ, or if you are filled with fear and insecurity right now.   I encourage you to read the book of Ephesians.  To put on your Armor, and remember who you are in Christ Jesus.  You have been adopted into God's Forever Family!!  He is your Father, your Daddy.  He is blessed.  He loves you and because He is blessed, you are blessed. It's part of your DNA!  If you have access to it, I highly recommend The Armor of God Study by Priscilla Shirer.  You can rent the video sessions on-line at Lifeway.com.   BUT you don't have to have the video sessions to do the study.  They are just an extra "bonus." :)  (and just as a disclaimer, I am not receiving anything to recommend this study.  I doubt the people at LifeWay or Priscilla Shirer, will ever even see this post and know that I have recommended the study.)

Here, There and Everywhere...

We left our temporary home in Florida on Sunday afternoon, March 12, and headed on an adventure.

Monday afternoon we arrived at the home of long time friends in Spartanburg, SC.  It was such a joy to spend time catching up with the Blantons.  We met them for the first time, just a couple months after we arrived in Ecuador, and they have been close family friends ever since!

Tuesday evening found us in Madison, VA, spending the night with our friends, Tim and Lori Duggins.  Their daughter, Megan,  was on Spring Break, so it was great to get to have a little time with her, too.

Wednesday, we headed up to Lancaster, PA, to spend a few days with the Blevins.  Cindy is from the church in New Jersey where I grew up, and is the closest to a sister, I have. :)  The exciting thing about traveling to PA, was that they had just had a "nor'easter" just come through and got about 2 feet of snow on Tuesday evening!!  We enjoyed some quiet days resting and visiting with them.  It was wonderful to get to see their grown children, and meet their new grandson, Ezra!

Another great surprise and highlight of our trip to PA, was that we had a "back-stage" tour of the Sight and Sound theater, which was super interesting, and then we were surprised, with tickets to see the Jonah Show!  It was amazing!!  What a wonderful gift to our family.

On Monday, March 20, we said, "good-bye" to our friends in PA and headed back to VA.   Tuesday, the 21st, our daughter, Carla, had her cardio check-up, at UVA medical center in Charlottesville. What a blessing to hear her doctor say, she is doing great!!  We are praising the Lord for all he has done in her life.  During our week in Madison, VA, we enjoyed catching up with friends.  Visiting a farm, and also seeing Tad Coffin Performance Saddles being made, and learning what all goes into it and why.  It was super interesting.

While we were there, I had the opportunity to join the Ladies Bible Study, from Mountain View Chapel.  My friend Lori, gave me the study book, to follow along, and I started the most amazing Bible Study, I have done in a long time.  The Armor of God Study, by Priscilla Shirer.  I have done lots of studies and they have all blessed my life in one way or another, but this one definitely is up there with the best of them.  I don't know why I am surprised, when God brings things into my life, at the perfect time, to teach me what I need to learn.  Many times, when I didn't even know I needed to learn it! ;)

Now we are back in Florida.  The kids just finished their week of spring break, although, I'm sure Teddy and Carla, would argue that point with you, since both of them spent time during their break participating in the standardized achievement testing going on at the Christian School.  We are looking forward to Easter and celebrating the resurrection of our Savior!!  Time is flying by.  We will be making a trip the first of May for 10 days to visit family in Ohio and Missouri.  When we get back home around the 10th, we will just have about 2 weeks, before we make our move back to Tennessee for June and July!  During these days, I am enjoying every minute with 2 of the grandkids that live nearby!!

Right now our plans are to spend 2 months in Tennessee and head back to Ecuador early in August.

Musings...

I have just finished reading a book that explained many of the customs and traditions of first century Jewish life, especially Galilean Jews.   It has been quite fascinating and I'm sure that I will be re-reading it many times just to take it all in.  There have been many things that I would love to share, and maybe over the course of the coming days/weeks, I will share different points, but today as the book came to a close, the author quoted a Greek philosopher's observation he had the opportunity of making of an early church.  His name was Aristides and here is what he wrote:

"They abstain from all impurity in the hope of the recompense that is to come in another world.  AS for their servants or handmaids or children, they persuade them to become Christians by the love they have for them; and when they become so, they call them without distinction, brothers.  They do not worship strange gods; and they walk in all humility and kindness, and falsehood is not found among them; and they love one another.  When they see the stranger they bring him to their homes and rejoice over him as over a true brother; for the do not call those who are after the flesh, but those who are in the Spirit and in God.

And if there is among them a man that is poor and needy and if they have not an abundance of necessities, they fast two or three days, that they may supply the needy with the necessary food.

They observe scrupulously the commandment of their Messiah; they live honestly and soberly as the Lord their God commanded them.  Every morning and all hours on account of the goodness of God toward them, they render praise and laud Him over their food and their drink; they render Him thanks...

The thought that came to my mind, was this, if Aristides had the opportunity to observe my church, would this have been his testimony?

Living Cruciform

I started a new Bible Study a couple weeks ago, The Broken Way by Ann Voskamp.  I will be honest and say that I started this study with some excitement BUT also some fear.  The passion of my life is to be more like Christ.  To change and grow and become the woman, wife, mother, daughter, friend, pastor's wife, missionary, that He wants me to be, yet, at the same time, nobody, including me enjoys being "broken".

The truth is, the day I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior, when I was 5 years old, He also became the LORD of my life.  I will admit that I have not always lived my life over the last 50 years as if that were true, BUT the the fact remains whether I admit it, or live it out on a daily basis HE is still LORD!

Paul wrote in Galatians 2:20, "I have been crucified with Christ.  It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.  And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

So basically, IF Christ is my LORD, my old self-centered, self-exalting desires, MUST come to an end.  That "old me" has been killed, crucified...and my life is NOT my own, but is now Christ living in me... Christ directing and empowering all that I do.  It is NONE of me and ALL Jesus!

BUT HOW, do I do this... the ONLY way, is to get up each day, and present my life anew to Christ. To say, "Here's my life, Lord.  Do whatever you wish to do with me today.  You are the driver, I'm just your passenger.  I trust you to take us and guide us through this day."

In Romans 12:1, Paul says that I am to present my body to God as a "living sacrifice".   So I am to be dead to myself, but alive to Christ.

After 50 years, you would think I had this all figured out, and that I would live my life with this reality in focus everyday, but I don't.  It is still a daily struggle.  There are mornings, that I wake up and think, "just for today, I'll just do my own thing."  Problem with that is, I miss all that He had planned for me that day!

Then to live "Cruciform" means to live my life in the shape of the cross.  To live so that everyone around me sees Jesus, and NOT me!  That my whole life is focused and centered on HIM and HIM alone.  To trust HIM completely, to take the broken pieces of my life and fit them together in a way that will bring honor and glory to his name.  Believing that only then will I have an abundant joyful life.
